The Quran is the Living word of God and the most distinguished characteristic of a living entity is growth and motion, hallmarks of responding. In order to convey the idea that Quran is a Living Word, God uses the symbol of a tree that is firmly rooted below and towers above seasonally producing fruits:

Have you not seen how Allah sets forth the parable of a goodly word which is like a goodly tree. Its root is firmly established [in the earth] and its branches [extending] into the heaven. Bringing forth its fruit in every season by the permission of its Lord and Allah sets parables for the human beings so that they may remember. (The Quran, chapter Ibrahim, 14:24-25).
